A 19-year-old man who died after being hit by multiple vehicles on a Tacoma highway last week has been identified.
James Grandberry died on May 27 near southbound Interstate 705 and the South 11th Street overpass. It is unknown where Grandberry was from, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office in a news release.
The medical examiner listed Grandberry’s cause and manner of death as “pending,” which is a temporary designation used when additional information is required for certification.
Grandberry was walking in one of the lanes of I-705 when four vehicles struck him around 11:27 p.m., according to a Washington State Patrol news release.
One of the vehicles drove off to stop at a parking lot off South Union Avenue and South 23rd Street, the release said. Three of the vehicles stopped on the roadway.
Grandberry died at the scene, the release said.
The release said drugs or alcohol were involved. The cause of the crash was still under investigation as of Monday afternoon.
Two drivers, 18 and 56, were from Tacoma, the release said. One 33-year-old driver was from Puyallup and a 26-year-old driver was from Federal Way. They were all uninjured.
