Gig Harbor police and firefighters responded Friday evening to a collision that killed two people at the intersection of Soundview Drive and Grandview Street.

Police Chief Kelly Busey clarified that the incident was a two-vehicle collision involving four individuals, not a car-versus-pedestrian collision, as initially reported on social media.

“Two people in one car, two people in the other,” he said.

The incident was a rear-ender: Both vehicles were heading northbound on Soundview Drive, Busey said. The trailing pickup truck, driven by a 50-year-old man, struck an SUV from behind.

“It looks like a medical emergency,” Busey said. “He was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed.”

A police press release issued Saturday offered more detail. The driver’s daughter, 15, tried to gain control of the truck when her father lost control. She could not. The truck passed several other vehicles before it hit the SUV, the release said.

A man, 66, and a woman, 65, were in the SUV. Both were killed, Busey said.

The 50-year-old driver and his daughter were transported to local hospitals.

Soundview Drive was closed while investigators responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
