Northbound I-5 was closed Saturday night after 8-vehicle crash near Tukwila, WSP says
A 20-year-old King County man triggered an eight-vehicle wreck Saturday night that closed northbound Interstate 5 near Tukwila for five hours, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Two people from Pierce County were involved in the wreck, but both escaped serious injury, a State Patrol memo shows.
Six people total were injured, including one man who was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
About 9:50 p.m., the 20-year-old man from Algona, who troopers say was traveling at a high rate of speed, triggered the larger wreck by first crashing into an 18-year-old Tacoma driver. The wreck ultimately involved five cars and three motorcycles, according to State Patrol.
That section of I-5 typically is congested as drivers determine whether they are going to continue north on I-5 or exit for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport or exit to Interstate 405.
Four of the six injured were treated at the scene, according to State Patrol.
The Algona man was injured and taken to Valley Medical Center in Renton. Troopers say he is facing a charge of “disregard for the safety of others.”
A 68-year-old Kent motorcyclist was taken to Harborview, according to State Patrol.
The other drivers or passengers involved in the crash are from Redmond, Des Moines, Lake Tapps, Ravensdale and Port Orchard, according to State Patrol.
