Fire destroys building, shuts down major roadway in Pierce County
Fire destroyed a business in Spanaway on Wednesday morning.
Crews from Central Pierce Fire & Rescue were dispatched to a fire that spread to nearby vegetation in the 21200 block of Mountain Highway East. All employees who were in the building were evacuated, the department posted on X at 9:38 a.m.
The fire was contained to the building, which was destroyed. Firefighters got the fire that spread to vegetation under control, Brianna Stenstrom, spokesperson for Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, told The News Tribune via phone call.
No one was injured, she said. The building was a former forest-product business, which reopened as a recycling center.
Fire crews were monitoring hot spots Wednesday morning. Mountain Highway was blocked in both directions near 211th Street Court East. One of the directions was expected to reopen soon, Stenstrom said.
The Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the cause of the fire.
