Fire drives residents from Tacoma home. Crews cut open roof to fight it
Residents of a Tacoma home were displaced after a fire burned inside an attic Wednesday morning.
Fire crews were dispatched at 11:04 a.m. to the 1000 block of Corona Drive after a caller reported flames were coming out of the roof. Heavy smoke was coming out of the attic when firefighters arrived, Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune.
Firefighters had to cut open the roof to get to the fire. The fire was contained to the attic, but the house is considered uninhabitable, Shepherd said. Firefighters were on scene Wednesday afternoon to make sure nothing in the attic was smoldering.
At least two people were inside the home when the fire broke out, and they got out safely, she said. There were no reported injuries.
It took firefighters about 50 minutes to get the fire under control.
According to the preliminary investigation, the fire is suspected to have been caused by malfunctioning or a failed bathroom ventilation fan, Shepherd said.
She said it is unclear how many people lived in the home.
