Car fatally strikes man sitting in dark road on the Key Peninsula
A man believed to have been sitting in the middle of a dark roadway on the Key Peninsula was killed Saturday when he was struck by a car, deputies report.
Authorities responded to the scene Saturday after the driver called around 1:15 a.m. to report that she had hit someone sitting in the roadway at Lake Drive Southwest and 188th Avenue Southwest, a report from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said.
She and a passerby attempted life-saving measures on the man until fire personnel arrived and began administering CPR, but he did not survive his injuries, the report said.
Deputies were unable to identify the man because he did not have identification on him but believe him to be in his mid-30s. He was transferred to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will work to identify him, according to the report.
The man was dressed in all dark clothing, and the road had no streetlights. The driver was on her way home from work when the collision occurred. She showed no signs of impairment and fully cooperated with the investigation, the report said.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carly Cappetto said that a “mini bike” was found down the road, but it’s unclear if it was related to the victim. The reason he was in the road is unknown, she said.
Cappetto said authorities will interview family members to learn more about the man once he has been identified.
