Afternoon update: All lanes have reopened. Drivers should expect congestion on the highway for some time.

Original post: Traffic on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is blocked following two crashes in the area Wednesday.

All lanes on State Route 16 eastbound near South 12th Street are blocked. The left shoulder is being used to get traffic by, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation at 10:17 a.m.

It is being described as a serious injury crash, according to State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo on X.

There were two seperate crashes. The first was a non-injury crash between two cars that blocked several lanes.

In the second crash, an approaching vehicle slowed quickly to avoid hitting the first crash but was hit from behind, Dattilo said.

Two people were in the vehicle that was struck. Dattilo told The News Tribune he believes at least five people were in the causing vehicle, but that is not confirmed. At least three people had serious injuries, and everyone was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area as the investigation continues. There are delays from Gig Harbor to Tacoma.
