Fatal shooting at Tacoma hospital - police respond, investigation underway

Tacoma police responded Wednesday evening to a shooting at MultiCare Allenmore Hospital in the city’s central area.

Police spokesperson Shelbie Boyd confirmed the shooting took place just after 7 p.m. in the lobby of the emergency room.

Two adults were shot, Boyd said. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman was injured.

“We believe an altercation took place off site from the shooting location and the suspect followed them,” Boyd said.

As of 10:54 p.m., police did not have anyone in custody, Boyd said.

The hospital has shifted to a more limited entry level, according to a statement from MultiCare spokesperson Scott Thompson.

“MultiCare Allenmore Hospital is currently on restricted access due to an incident in the Emergency Department. The ED is open for walk-in patients,” Thompson’s statement said. “Restricted access doesn’t allow for any visitors at this time. Tacoma Police are on-site investigating the incident.

“One person died as a result of this incident. All MultiCare staff are safe and unharmed.”

The hospital is open Thursday morning and operating normally, according to a spokesperson for MultiCare. The emergency department is open for walk-ins, but the waiting room is closed for the investigation.

Ambulances are still being diverted.
