Big changes coming to this Tacoma park. Here’s what is up next
The Peck Community Sports Park in Central Tacoma is one step closer to completion after the Parks Tacoma board on Aug. 11 approved a contract to begin designing Phase 2 of the project.
The board first approved plans to redesign the 9-acre space in 2023, converting it from a single-purpose baseball field to a multi-use sports field and community space that will also serve as Stadium High School’s baseball team’s home base. The work on Phase 1 wrapped up in 2024, according to Parks Tacoma. The second phase will include plans for a “multi-sport” field that patrons can use for soccer, kickball, softball or baseball, and a restroom building with storage and space for people to check-out equipment.
Parks Tacoma and Tacoma Public Schools initially planned to renovate Stanley Playfield behind Stanley Elementary School just south of the Peck Community Sports Park for Stadium High School’s baseball team. They later announced plans to do so at what is now the Peck Community Sports Park after the Stanley plan proved controversial – Central Tacoma residents voiced concerns that a ballpark at the site would take up too much of the property.
The board approved a $703,232 contract with Fora Landscape Architects for the design work on Phase 2, according to a release from Parks Tacoma.
“We want to fulfill Peck’s potential to be a vibrant park that offers children a place to play sports or be active, as well as become a place for families and friends to gather,” Park Board president Andrea Smith said in the release. “And it’s not just about supporting healthy, active lifestyles – it’s about creating equal access to play.”
Though Parks Tacoma has yet to identify funding for the project’s third phase, the landscape architect will eventually be tasked with designing for that phase, which will include an open lawn, a walking trail, a playground and a garden. The project is funded through a variety of sources, including a 2014 bond measure, a state grant for athletic-facilities renovations and a state commerce grant for a total of $4,356,165, according to the Aug. 11 meeting agenda.
