A motorcyclist died after a crash with a car on Interstate 5 in Tacoma Thursday afternoon.

State patrol troopers were dispatched to the highway near South 56th Street for the crash at around 2:24 p.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The motorcyclist and a woman driving a car were going northbound on I-5 in one of the middle lanes. The woman saw the motorcyclist behind her in her rear view mirror splitting lanes. This means he was driving on the broken white lines in between two lanes, Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo told The News Tribune.

The woman thought there was enough distance to merge. As she tried to merge her car to a left lane, she allegedly struck the motorcyclist, Dattilo said. It is unclear if the motorcyclist was trying to merge as well.

The motorcyclist was ejected and he died on the scene, Dattilo said. He was an adult.

The woman was not injured or intoxicated. She is cooperating with investigators.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
