A 19-year-old man drowned Friday at Spanaway Lake, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carly Cappetto confirmed Saturday.

The victim was reported missing at 6:22 p.m. Friday by a friend who told 911 that the victim was underwater and needed help, Cappetto said in an email.

“He reported they had been swimming near the swimming area at Spanaway Lake Park and his friend did not know how to swim but continued to swim out further where he could not touch,” she said.

Sheriff’s Office marine services and dive teams searched the waters for the teenager and, in a 9:30 p.m. Friday update, the Sheriff’s Office said it had recovered the victim and turned him over to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
