7 residents displaced after fire blazes through two homes in Tacoma

Seven people and a dog were displaced after two homes burned in Tacoma on Friday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 2300 block of 67th Avenue Northeast after several neighbors reported the fire. They were unsure if one or multiple houses were on fire, Tacoma Fire spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune.

One house with an attached garage was on fire. Shepherd said the fire was so intense that it got in the garage and spread onto two vehicles in the driveway. Flames also spread to an attic of the home next door, which was vacant and up for sale since June.

The second house was significantly damaged, she said. The first house was a total loss.

Shepherd said that when the fire began, residents inside the first home evacuated safely. No one was injured. One person was evaluated but did not need to be taken to a hospital or be treated.

The American Red Cross has been connected to the residents who were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Shepherd said that initial calls reported explosions in the garage.
