Puyallup man killed after Amtrak train splits car in two has been identified

A Puyallup man who died after a train crashed into his vehicle, splitting it in two, in Sumner on Monday has been identified, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Cole Wilson-Porster, 22, died after the Amtrak train hit his car near the 800 block of Maple Street. His cause and manner of death are listed as pending, the office wrote in a news release. That is a temporary designation used when additional information is required for certification.

The wreck happened at about 10:30 a.m. Half of the vehicle took out the crossing arm and signal, city spokesperson Carmen Palmer told The News Tribune for a previous story on the crash.

Palmer said witnesses and video footage indicate the driver tried to go around the crossing arm. He was the only person in the vehicle, and East Pierce Fire & Rescue crews took him to Tacoma General Hospital, she said.

The wreck caused several hours of closure before the crossing was reopened Monday night.
