27 dogs rescued from ‘deplorable conditions’ in Pierce County home, PCSO says

Police rescued over two dozen dogs in the Midland area last week.

According to a Sept. 25 Facebook post from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, officers rescued 27 dogs from a home in the 3400 block of 52nd Street East on Sept. 15. It started when animal control got an online complaint that said “the smell and amount of dogs and puppies barking nonstop was out of control,” according to the post.

The complaint also said the house “was filled with garbage and overgrown bushes.”

“Officers responded to conduct a welfare check at the property and discovered 27 dogs living in small rooms in small cages in the home,” the post said. “The dogs were in deplorable conditions, which were unsanitary and filled with urine and feces.”

The officers used a warrant to take the dogs to a local veterinary hospital for treatment, then to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. They also found two “recently deceased” dogs, the post said.

“Criminal charges will be forwarded to a prosecutor for review for animal cruelty and confinement of animals in an unsafe manner,” the post said. “Please know that in Pierce County, you are allowed to have up to five dogs and/or cats combined. If you are to have more than 5 of these types of animals, you need to apply for a kennel license.”
