  • Jenn Fukuwa launches Fit4Mom stroller workouts in Pierce County parks Nov. 12.
  • Classes run three times weekly rain or shine; first session free for newcomers.
  • Programs combine prenatal and postpartum fitness with peer support; prices start at $25.

On Thursday afternoon a group of women gathered with their children in strollers near the playground of Cirque Park in University Place, ready to begin their workout.

Their instructor, Jenn Fukuwa, will offer outdoor mom-and-children workout classes in Pierce County parks starting Nov. 12 as part of her new business franchise, Fit4Mom. The former elementary school teacher (who is certified in prenatal and postpartum fitness) has a 2-year-old son and wanted to find a way to build community with other moms while getting active in the outdoors.

On Thursday, Fukuwa led a couple of her friends in tailored prenatal and postpartum exercises designed to raise the heart rate and rebuild their cores and pelvic floors. Facing their children in strollers the moms squatted and pulled resistance bands, ending the session with an exercise where they unfurled a colorful parachute over their children’s heads while singing nursery songs.

Fukuwa said she was part of a Fit4Mom “Stroller Strides” group when she lived in California. She said she wanted to start her own in University Place because the closest one she could find was on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Starting next month Fukuwa will lead classes three times a week in Cirque Park (7401 Cirque Dr. W., University Place) and other parks, rain or shine. Attendee’s first class is free, and prices start at $25/class and $69/month, with discounts available. Register online at https://fit4mom.com/location/university-place. A grand opening is scheduled for Nov. 12 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at OURCHURCH (5000 67th Ave. W., University Place).

Fukuwa reached out to The News Tribune after she heard about the new Sunrise Play Cafe opening soon in Tacoma and wanted to highlight other places new moms could find connections and stay active.

“I feel like postpartum can be really lonely. It can feel very isolating, and you have so many questions. As a first time mom, I had so many questions, and I felt like I didn’t have any family nearby, or people who had just gone through the process,” she said. “When I went to classes, I was with other moms who were in the same months of postpartum as I was, and we could bounce questions off of each other and share resources that we had found. And really, truly, we learn from each other. And then the moms with older children are there to give advice as well.”

Moms that continue to come to class find more ease getting their kids out of the house and grow in confidence, Fukuwa said.

“There’s backed research that when you’re outside, fresh air [also] increases your endorphins, your oxytocin. I don’t know that a lot of people have experienced a workout class outside in Washington,” she said. “This is definitely something new for this area, and I hope that people are open to it.”
