High school student hit by vehicle while running alongside Puyallup road
A vehicle hit and critically injured a youth who was running alongside a Puyallup road Monday, police and fire personnel report.
Puyallup police were called to the intersection of 7th Street Northeast and 2nd Avenue Northeast at 3:56 p.m., police spokesperson Kevin Gill said.
The youth is a member of the Puyallup High School cross-country team, police posted on X later in the evening. He had been running with his team when the collision occurred.
The Puyallup Police Department “is in communication with Puyallup School District and doing what we can to support PHS and the PSD,” the post said.
Central Pierce Fire & Rescue district chief Kent, who declined to give his first name, said fire personnel transported the youth in critical condition to a local hospital. The driver of the vehicle was not injured, he said.
Gill said that the driver was cooperative in the initial investigation and didn’t exhibit “any initial signs of impairment.”
“The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene for an unrelated misdemeanor charge,” the police department’s update on X said.
“ ... our Major Collision Response Team is just starting to get on scene now, and they’ll take over the investigation for us,” he told The News Tribune at about 5:30 p.m. He didn’t have an update on the student’s condition but said he believes the student remains in critical condition.
A Puyallup police post on Facebook at 5:22 p.m. said the intersection is closed to traffic until further notice and advised drivers to take alternate routes.
The collision investigation was ongoing, according to the update on X at 6:16 p.m.
A press release provided additional information about the incident:
The cross-country team athletes were running east in the 600 block of 2nd Avenue Northeast. The victim was hit while entering the intersection by a vehicle traveling south on 7th Street Northeast. A coach immediately responded to the runner who was hit.
The driver is a 27-year-old man. The age of the student was not included in the press release.
