Cause of fire that destroyed Nalley Valley manufacturing plant remains a mystery

The cause for the fire that destroyed a manufacturing plant in the Nalley Valley area of Tacoma over the summer has been listed as undetermined.

The overnight fire engulfed Johnson’s Millwork in the 2300 block of South Tacoma Way on July 13. Firefighters battled the flames into the next day, The News Tribune reported. The business manufactured doors, trim and millwork.

The building was constructed in 1926.

The fire reportedly started in the crawl space underneath the building and burned through the floor above it. It continued to burn up until the flames reached the top, Tacoma Fire spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune on Thursday.

Shepherd said the specifics of the fire could not be investigated because of the severe damage. It is undetermined how the fire started.

A firefighter sustained minor injuries on the scene but did not require hospitalization.

The smoke from the fire was visible from Interstate 5 and state Route 16.
