Two people dead after house fire breaks out in Pierce County

Update:

The two victims who died in a house fire in Graham Monday were a married couple in their 70s, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Office report on its blotter.

“The preliminary investigation does not show any suspicious activity in the deaths of this couple,” the report said. A passerby noticed the smoke and flames in the 27600 block of Webster Road East just after 11 a.m. Monday and called 911.

Pierce County sheriff’s detectives and forensics technicians are heading the death investigation, while Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and the fire marshal are handling the investigation into the fire’s cause, according to the report.

The report also advised people to check their heat sources as the weather gets colder “to ensure everything is working properly and make sure nothing is around them to catch fire.”

The fire broke out in the 27600 block of Webster Road East, and crews located an injured patient who received medical care. An update on X a few minutes later said the patient did not survive.

A second victim was found dead in the home after the flames were put out and firefighters were able to safely re-enter the building, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue posted in an update on X just before 3 p.m.

“Firefighters faced challenging conditions, including limited water supply, requiring water tenders to shuttle water to the scene, and structural instability on the second floor,” the post said. “The fire was brought under control with assistance from South Pierce Fire & Rescue. The Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.”

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue spokesperson Brianna Stenstrom said that crews encountered a house engulfed in flames and hazardous conditions when they arrived.

“There (were) concerns about the second story collapsing and so we were doing the defensive strategy to put out the fire,” Stenstrom said.

She said the first victim had been pulled out of the building shortly after crews arrived. Efforts to revive the first victim through CPR were not successful.

The initial call originally went out at 11:04 a.m., Central Pierce Fire & Rescue District Chief Ron Kent told The News Tribune in a phone call. The structure was a two-story residential structure. Crews found the victim inside the house and no other occupants, he said.

Medical examiner personnel and forensics technicians are on scene, and 16 units responded to the fire, he said. The cause is under investigation at this time.
