‘Horrific freak accident’: Tree falls during trick-or-treating event in Roy
One person has died and others were injured Saturday after a tree fell during a Halloween trick or treating event at McKenna Park in Roy.
The large tree appeared to have cracked in half in a “horrific freak accident” caused by strong winds, Pierce County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Carly Cappetto said.
At 1:02 p.m. the tree fell on six to eight booths, trapping five to seven people and killing a man approximately 30 years old, Cappetto said.
Six people were injured in total, including three people transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Two people were treated for milder injuries at the scene, according to Central Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Jeff Davison.
About 40 to 80 people were attending the celebration.
