A SWAT standoff in Summit ended in an arrest. Here’s what happened.
After setting multiple fires Thursday and threatening to kill himself and others with a knife, a 57-year-old man is in custody following a lengthy SWAT standoff in Summit.
A caller notified authorities at 11:57 a.m. of a man armed with a knife setting his town home on fire near the 17400 block of 118 Avenue Court East.
The suspect was making threats to burn the place down and kill himself and others with a knife, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesperson Carly Cappetto told the News Tribune.
When SWAT teams and deputies arrived, the suspect had barricaded himself in the garage and doused himself in acetone.
After around three hours of unsuccessful negotiations, authorities moved inside and shot the suspect with a bean bag shotgun, leading to his arrest.
The incident blocked off the neighborhood, forcing school bus routes to readjust.
The suspect was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, but he escaped from custody and ran off in his handcuffs.
Puyallup Police found him at Motel Puyallup. He was arrested again at 4:06 p.m.
He was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of multiple felony charges, including arson in the first degree, domestic violence, felony harassment and threats to kill.
