Driver fatally strikes woman standing in lane of Tacoma highway

A Fife woman died after a vehicle struck her in Tacoma on Thursday night.

A 35-year-old Tacoma man was driving his 2009 Subaru Forester south on state Route 705 near 15th Street when he struck the woman who was standing in the lane, according to the Washington State Patrol in a news release.

The incident was reported at 9:17 p.m.

The driver stopped on the left shoulder, the release said. He was not injured.

The 40-year-old woman died at the scene.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol was involved. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The roadway was blocked for three hours and 32 minutes, according to the release.
