A dirt biker is in the hospital after falling an estimated 100 to 200 feet from a cliff near Wilkeson on Friday, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Two men were dirt-biking in a remote area common for outdoor recreational activities at around noon, said sheriff’s spokesperson Carly Cappetto. At some point during their ride, the ground collapsed underneath one of the drivers, causing him to fall down the side of a cliff.

The second driver avoided the collapse and is uninjured.

The biker who fell was conscious and talking, but sustained a head injury. Sheriff’s deputies worked with the Buckley City Fire Department’s ropes team to use a steep ropes course along the side of the cliff to rescue the biker.

The biker was airlifted to Harborview. His condition is unknown at this time.
