Tacoma community pool closed until further notice after officials find damage

The pool at Tacoma’s Eastside Community Center is closed until further notice, according to Parks Tacoma.

Parks officials uncovered additional damage to the pool, which opened about eight years ago, during a routine maintenance check in December, according to spokesperson Stacia Glenn. The maintenance check revealed a leaky circulation pump, and as staff were repairing the leak they found that the pump needs a new “impeller,” which helps circulate water in the pool, Glenn said.

Replacing the impeller will cost $6,000, she added.

“We expect to reopen Eastside Community Center pool in February, but the exact date will depend on when the impeller arrives,” Glenn wrote in an email. “Once the impeller arrives, maintenance staff will repair, reinstall and test the pump before reopening to the public.”

All programming set to take place at the pool in January is paused, according to the Parks Tacoma website. People who signed up for swim lessons in January can have their lessons credited, the website states.

The Eastside Community Center was built in 2018, a $32 million project that took years to complete. It’s the result of a community effort to establish a place for youth in the Eastside to spend time after school — after Eastside teenager Billy Ray died in a shooting after a party in Nalley Valley in 2011.

The parks district will post updates on the repair work to their website. For questions, contact aquatics@parkstacoma.gov.
