1 killed, 2 injured after fleeing driver crashes in Tacoma at 110 mph

One person is dead and two others injured after a driver, reportedly fleeing from a state trooper, crashed into a power pole overnight Sunday in Tacoma.

Around 1 a.m., a trooper tried to stop the driver of a stolen vehicle on southbound state Route 509 at Port of Tacoma Road, according to Trooper Kameron Watts and a State Patrol memo about the crash.

The driver then fled west on south 21st Street, approaching south C Street, the memo reads. The driver then lost control and crashed near 21st Street and Pacific Avenue.

“The fleeing vehicle crashed into a power pole at approximately 110 mph,” Watts said. “There were 3 occupants inside of the vehicle to include the driver.”

The front-seat passenger died at the scene, while the driver and second passenger suffered serious injuries and were taken to Tacoma General Hospital.

The driver is suspected of the following crimes: vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, second-degree murder, driving under the influence and felony eluding, the memo reads.

Tacoma police are handling the collision investigation, according to the memo. Driver and passenger details are still pending.

The road in the area of the crash was blocked for five hours.
