Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies shot a man suspected of stabbing another man and his dog early Sunday morning, the Pierce County Force Investigation Team said in updated information released Sunday afternoon.
The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he later died.
About 6:25 a.m., deputies were dispatched to an SS Quickstop Grocery in the area of 112th Street South and Park Avenue South in Parkland after a 54-year-old man called 911 to report he had been stabbed.
Deputies arrived to learn that an unknown man had approached the victim and asked about his religious beliefs.
“The victim answered the man and said something about being a Christian, and the man then attacked and stabbed the victim and his dog,” the release reads.
The victim provided a description of the suspect before being transported to an area hospital. The dog also went to an area animal hospital and was taken into surgery, according to the release.
Deputies then used a police dog to track the suspect, but were unable to find him.
However, a deputy spotted the suspect in the 800 block of 112th Street South about 8:40 a.m. The suspect allegedly fled behind a nearby home.
Deputies followed the suspect and attempted to talk to him. The man was armed and when he advanced on the deputies, they reported shots fired at 8:47 a.m.
“Deputies provided medical aid to the suspect until medics arrived,” the Pierce County Force Investigation Team news release reads. “He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.”
The suspect has not been identified. No officers were injured during this incident, and there is no continuing threat to the community.
The ongoing investigation has been turned over to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team.
