Rescue divers retrieved a man from the Thea Foss Waterway on Tuesday evening, Tacoma Fire Department Spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune.

Responders began CPR and transported him to a local hospital. He is in serious condition.

Authorities received a call about a man in his 20’s in distress in the water near 1195 Dock St. at 5:52 p.m., Shepherd said.

A witness at the Fish Peddler Restaurant heard a man in the water yelling for help and were able to point Tacoma firefighters to the general vicinity where they heard the yelling.

After Tacoma firefighters searched the dock and did not find anything, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office rescue divers arrived at the scene, located the man underwater and pulled him to shore.

The Tacoma Police Department is investigating the incident.
