Washington State Patrol increases its DUI patrols for Super Bowl Sunday

In the wake of tomorrow’s drunken Super Bowl Sunday festivities, the Washington State Patrol is preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.

State troopers in Tacoma will have extra patrols stationed along state roads starting Sunday morning and extending into 2 a.m. Monday, Trooper Kameron Watts told The News Tribune.

If you’re going to a Super Bowl watch party or bar, the most important thing is that you have a plan to get home safely or lodge locally, Watts said. This could mean getting hotel arrangements ahead of time, having a designated sober person to drive you home or using other transportation methods like ride-share apps or transportation services with courtesy rides.

“We just want everybody to get home safe to their families, and hopefully this will be a day where we don’t have to respond to a tragic incident,” Watts said.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office also shared a post on Facebook reminding Super Bowl fans that “impaired driving is never a winning decision.”

Law enforcement agencies across Washington will be out in full force Sunday to keep the roads safe, the post read.

“Whether it’s alcohol, cannabis, or any substance that affects your ability to drive, getting behind the wheel puts lives at risk, including your own,” the post said. “Plan your ride before kickoff. Designate a sober driver, use a ride-share, stay the night, or host responsibly.”
