Person found dead after Pierce County tent fire, firefighters say

A man was found dead Wednesday morning in the Midland area of Pierce County after fire crews extinguished a tent fire behind a home, according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.

Fire crews were dispatched shortly after 10 a.m. to the 9900 block of 15th Avenue Court East, the fire department said in a post on X. That is a few blocks west of Portland Avenue.

When firefighters arrived, they found an active tent fire behind a single-family home, according to the post. After the fire was put out, crews found a man dead inside the tent. Brianna Stenstrom, a spokesperson for the fire department, confirmed the victim was an adult male.

The fire department said the cause and manner of the person’s death is being investigated by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
