Road closures scheduled on this Tacoma highway. Detours in place

A highway in Tacoma will be closed throughout the weekend.

All northbound lanes of state Route 509 will close from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday from Port of Tacoma Road to Taylor Way East, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The left lane of southbound SR 509 from Taylor Avenue East to Port of Tacoma Road will be closed at the same time.

Detours will be in place.

“Alexander Avenue East between southbound SR 509 and 12th Street East will be closed. The closure is necessary so crews can shift northbound traffic to the left onto a bypass. The bypass is expected to be in place for up to three months, according to WSDOT.

The bypass lets crews set up a zone to continue improvements on the intersection at SR 509 and Alexander Avenue East.

The work is part of the State Route 167 Completion Project, which will build six new miles of tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma. Sidewalks and shared-use paths for non-motorized travelers also will be built.

This project is anticipated to be completed in 2030.
