The South Hill Mall is getting a new Asian market and food court.
Housed at the old Toys R Us location at 3551 Ninth St., the South Hill Asian Center will have an international food supermarket on one side and a food court called Hong Kong Market on the other side.
This will be the chain’s fourth location for Hong Kong Market, which first opened in Kent in 2008. Brian Hoang, owner of Hong Kong Market, told The News Tribune that, over time, they expanded to Federal Way and Burien. Now, they’re branching out to Pierce County.
“Our focus is not quite just Asian food but international food,” Hoang said. “When you walk into our store, you will see everything from, obviously, Asian seasoning and ingredients but also Middle Eastern, and we have aisles of American food and seasoning. It’s like you would find at Safeway or Whole Foods.”
For the food court, there will be eight vendors. Hoang said he has filled five of the eight slots:
- Asia XPress will serve build-your-own Asian meals such as bulgogi, yakisoba, kimbap and banh mi.
- Mr. Dim Sum will serve Chinese classics along with dumplings and buns.
- Natalie’s Sugarcane and Dessert will serve Vietnamese treats and sugarcane drinks
- Pho J will be a Vietnamese restaurant that specializes in soups.
- A vendor will serve Korean food. Hoang said the vendor does not have a name yet.
Hoang is still looking for vendors to fill the three vacant spots before the location opens.
“I’m looking for Mexican food, like, tacos would be perfect,” Hoang said. “I’m looking for burgers, I’m looking for Japanese ramen.”
The project is under construction, Hoang said, but they are hoping to wrap up construction this September and open to customers in October.
“We have a lot of customers from Puyallup coming to our locations and asking us when we’re going to have a location in Puyallup and we’ve been looking in the Puyallup area for a long time,” Hoang said. “When my broker contacted me about an opportunity in the South Hill Mall, we struck a deal with the landlord and started a project.”
Toys R Us vacated the spot in 2017, and Hoang said it has been vacant since.
“The landlord has been very selective of who is going in there and they wait for the right tenants and the right business concept that will bring more traffic to their shopping mall,” Hoang said.
