3 taken to hospital after electric heater sparks fire in Tacoma home

Three people were taken to hospital after a house fire in Tacoma on Monday.

Firefighters were dispatched at 8:43 a.m. to a house in the 3800 block of South J Street. Three people and a dog were trying to get out of the house when firefighters arrived, Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune.

She said they got out of the house, and the people were taken to local hospitals. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

The fire was extinguished quickly, and firefighters wrapped up around 9 a.m., Shepherd said. The flames did not do significant damage and were contained to the living room. There is smoke damage throughout the house.

An electric wall heater that was too close to a cardboard box ignited the fire, she said.

Shepherd said any object that can catch fire should be kept at least three feet from any electric heat source
