Tacoma Art Museum closes for weekend due to safety threat, TPD says

The Tacoma Art Museum closed for the weekend after receiving a possible safety threat Friday, the museum announced on Facebook.

TAM was evacuated by employees yesterday afternoon after receiving a second-hand report that someone was coming to “shoot the place up,” Tacoma Police Department Officer Shelbie Boyd told The News Tribune.

The threat was deemed not credible by officials and only communicated to the museum, TAM added in the post’s comments.

“The police who responded to our call have since concluded based on the evidence that it is not a credible threat,” said TAM Executive Director Andy Maus. “It appears at this point to be a false alarm. At no point was there a threat to the general community that we know of.”

Still, out of an abundance of caution, the museum will remain closed this weekend and reopen next Wednesday at 10 a.m.

The Tacoma Art Museum has been a creative anchor in downtown Tacoma since 1935, holding over 5,400 works of art. Its latest exhibition, “Project NW: Ralph Pugay,” will be on view until May 16.
