Farmers market season is starting. Here’s where to find them in Pierce County

Spring is finally here, and that means outdoor farmers markets are coming out of hibernation.

Whether you’re a home cook who prefers fresh produce, or someone that likes to find homemade treats from local vendors, there’s a market for you.

Here’s a list of the current and upcoming seasonal farmers markets around Pierce County.

Broadway Farmers Market

  • 1099 949 Broadway, Tacoma
  • Every Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Broadway Farmers Market is back in downtown Tacoma next week. With over 40 vendors, visitors will find a mix of local fruits and veggies, flowers, and treats like fresh bread, cookies, coffee, kimchi and hot sauce, to name a few. Other vendors sell goods like jewelry, essential oils and handmade soap. Prepared food stands include aHHa Snack Cart (charcuterie), Gateway to India, Lumpia Love, Galileo’s Pizzeria and Burrito Boy. A variety of local musicians will also perform at the market, including Baloogz, Pickin’ Tansies, Gina Belliveau, Sean Gaskell and Polybanderous Productions.

Proctor Farmers’ Market

  • North 27th and North Proctor streets, Tacoma
  • Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

While this farmers market in Tacoma’s Proctor District is year-round (with markets on select Saturdays during the winter), the regular season returns April 4. There are over 70 vendors, selling everything from fresh produce, meat, dairy, seafood, flowers and wine. There’s also quite a few bakeries that set up shop, along with makers of specialty olives, kimchi, coffee, hot sauce, nuts and more. To get a snack or a meal on the go, turn to prepared food stands like El Chito Tamales, Trini Plate (Trinidadian comfort food), Gateway to India, Green Heart Smoothies and Pampeana Empanadas. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a range of local artists perform. Puyallup Farmers’ Market

This local farmers market claims it’s one of the largest in Washington state, with up to 150 participants spread throughout the indoor and outdoor marketplace. While no specific list of vendors is available, the market offers the usual farm stands, meat and seafood stands, flower stands, bakeries, small-batch goods, and home and garden items. There’s a food court with a range of prepared foods. Not every vendor will be at each market, but the market’s organizers encourage visitors to come each week and see who’s there. There’s live performances each week by local artists, usually from 11 a.m. -1 p.m.

Haunted Farmers Market

  • Corner of South 54th Street and South Tacoma Way, Tacoma
  • Select Sundays each month, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This unique farmers market in South Tacoma (which has won awards from Best of Pierce County and Best in the PNW) is usually open two Sundays a month through October and had its season opener March 8. The market boasts about 140 rotating vendors offering things like flash tattoos, gems, tarot-card readings, taxidermy, artwork, jewelry and clothing. Of course, there’s food, including small-batch goods like hot sauce, baked goods, drink mixes and kettle corn, and prepared food stands like Cursed Corn (Mexican-style street corn), Lumpia Love, Just A Pizza My Mind, Morena’s Mexican Food and Thirst Killer Lemonade. Upcoming dates this season are April 12 and 26, May 17 and 31, June 14 and 28, July 12 and 26, Aug. 9 and 23, Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27, and Oct.11 and 25.

Tacoma Sunday Market

  • Broadway between 9th and 11th streets, Tacoma
  • First Sunday of each month, March 1 to Nov. 1

While technically a flea market, the Tacoma Sunday Market also has small-batch foods and a full food court. In March, the prepared food options included Buddy’s Chicken & Waffles, Taquizas Nathaly (tacos), Seven Sons Kitchen (BBQ), The Lemonade Co., Day Drinks (coffee and other drinks), and Jess Kusina (baked goods). Visitors at the market will also find a ton of vintage clothing and decor, jewelry, furniture and records.

Farmers markets opening later this spring

Village Farmers’ Market

This farmers market in Graham officially opens for the season on May 3. While there’s no list of vendors just yet, visitors can expect the usual array of local produce, flowers, meat and seafood, baked goods and other prepared foods. Orting Valley Farmers Market

While this farmers market in Orting is lining up vendors for this season, expect fresh produce, artisan goods, small-batch food and prepared food. Past vendors have included Jamie’s Baked Goodies, June Bug Sauce, Evermade Soap, One Spoiled Dog Treat Co. and Our Daily Bread. You can see updates on the market’s Facebook page.

Gig Harbor Waterfront Farmers Market

The Gig Harbor Waterfront Farmers Market offers an array of fresh produce, meat and seafood, flowers, small-batch goods, jewelry and other crafts, and prepared food. Some regular vendors include Purdy’s Pickles, Northwest Spices, Holloway Farms (preserves and jams) and Mount Virginia (shortbread cookies). Local artists also perform at the market.

Along with this list, there’s also the Lakewood Farmers Market, the DuPont Farmers Market and the Enumclaw Plateau Farmers Market, which all kick off in June.
