Crystals, witch hats, tarot readings offered at new Tacoma outdoor market

Tacoma has a new outdoor market, and it’s full of mystical, magical and metaphysical things.

Northwest Metaphysical Market had its grand opening April 11 and is scheduled to continue every other Saturday for the most part (sometimes it will be every third Saturday).

The market sets up on Broadway between South 9th and South 11th streets and runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The first market had over 100 vendors selling jewelry, clothing, crystals, tarot cards, lucky rabbit’s feet and other mystical goodies.

The market’s founder, Heather Green, said she was into crystals and rocks as a child but that her fascination with the metaphysical and magical world really began in her 20s.

She said she was introduced to that world by a woman going through recovery, who Green was sponsoring at the time.

“She was super into the metaphysical and kind of characterized herself as a polytheistic eclectic pagan … and I was like, I’m down,” Green said.

That led Green to do some research, including visiting metaphysical shops in the area.

“[I] just started getting really into it — into the spiritual side — and not really connecting with a traditional religion, but connecting with the spirit of the universe and learning about mythology and different deities and energy work and things like that,” Green said.

After creating an Etsy shop to sell different handmade items like spell candles (used for rituals or manifestation) and rabbit’s foot keychains, Green officially created West Coast Witchcraft, setting up as a vendor at different niche markets in the area.

Since Tacoma didn’t have its own specific metaphysical market, Green decided to start her own.

While it’s a niche market, Green wants to encourage anyone who might not be knowledgeable about metaphysical items and services to come and explore.

The website reads that the market’s mission is “to cultivate an inclusive and supportive marketplace to uplift small businesses, honor diverse spiritual paths and foster meaningful connection to creativity,” Green said.

Customers can find anything from preserved animals to body scrubs to witches hats. Many vendors also offer tarot-card readings, astrology readings and energy healing.

Along with the vendors, Northwest Metaphysical Market hosts live music and several food trucks. Stacks Burgers, The Lemon Shack and Starboard Sweets were a few of the food options at the first market.

At future markets, Green said, she plans to have more food vendors and performers.

The next market is on April 25, and Green said she’ll host mini markets the following Sunday on South Tacoma Way next to The Church Cantina.
