From park clean-ups to nature walks, explore Earth Day events around Pierce Co.
Earth Day is just a few days away, and there are lots of ways to get outside and earn your green thumb around Pierce County.
Many Earth Day events start this weekend and go through Earth Day on April 22.
Whether you’re looking to clean up a park or learn more about how to be environmentally friendly, there’s an event for you.
Habitat Restoration at Wapato Hills Park
- April 18, 9 a.m. - noon
- 6231 S. Wapato St., Tacoma
This event, hosted by Parks Tacoma, will bring together volunteers to remove invasive non-native plants and help to “maintain the ecology of the area,” according to Parks Tacoma. Those interested can register for the event online.
Earth Day celebration at Meridian Habitat Park
- April 18, 11 a.m - 2 p.m.
- 14422 Meridian E., Puyallup
Pierce County Parks and Pierce County Planning and Public Works are teaming up for this free Earth Day event on Saturday. Visitors can expect vendor booths offering hands-on activities, free tree giveaways, nature walks and food trucks. There will also be presentations on topics like hiking safety and how to identify local plants.
The People’s Earth Day March
- April 18, 1-3 p.m.
- Starts at Point Defiance, 5715 Roberts Garden Dr., Tacoma
Climate Alliance South Sound is hosting a march Saturday from Point Defiance to Dune Park. The organization says its demanding an end to “attacks on the environment from the Trump administration” and is fighting against “environmental racism, infringements upon Indigenous sovereignty, and violations against worker’s rights.” Climate Alliance South Sound is also pushing for a community controlled climate commission for the city of Tacoma. Shuttles, snacks and water will be provided.
Clean Up Tacoma on Maxwell Way
- April 19, noon - 2 p.m.
- Maxwell Way, Tacoma
The environmentalist group 350 Tacoma will host a community clean up this Sunday on Maxwell Way. The group hosted a similar event in March, but said it could only clean up about half of the road. Gloves, tools and snacks will be provided.
Composting class
- April 19, 10 a.m. - noon
- The Farm at Franklin Pierce Schools, 9516 Waller Road E., Tacoma
This free event, hosted by Pierce County Planning and Public Works, will educate participants about the different types of composting and at-home recycling.
Buckley Earth Day celebration
- April 19, noon - 3 p.m.
- Coke Oven Park, 637 Railroad Ave., Buckley
This Earth Day event in Buckley will feature educational talks on history, culture, salmon and native plants, along with family-friendly activities and food and retail vendors.
Plastic recycling talk
- April 21, 6-7 p.m.
- Virtual
This virtual event will teach participants about how to properly recycle plastics in Pierce County, why some plastics are accepted and some aren’t, and where recycling actually goes. Those interested can register online.
Puyallup Earth Day celebration
- April 22, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
- Multiple locations throughout the Clark’s Creek Watershed area in Puyallup
There’s a lot happening on Earth Day in Puyallup. Events include a bird walk, a history and native plant walk, a garden tour, a rooftop solar-panel house tour, a trail clean-up and a carbon-impact workshop. To wrap up the day, there will be a campfire potluck dinner at Blue Skye Farm. Specific events, times and locations are available on the Earth Day South Sound website.
Tacoma climate discussion
- April 22, 6:30-8 p.m.
- Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 1115 S. 56th St., Tacoma
The organization Indivisible Tacoma is hosting a talk titled. “Saving WA Lands for People, Wildlife, and Climate.” Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove will talk about his plans for protecting the climate and local forests.
