Suspected arson fire displaces residents living in 10 Pierce County apartments

Residents living in an apartment building in University Place were displaced after a Friday fire.

Firefighters were on scene at the 3100 block of Bridgeport Way West. Fire crews got the fire under control after an aggressive attack, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue at 5:57 a.m.

No one was injured. Residents of 10 apartment units were displaced due to the power needing to be disconnected. The American Red Cross is assisting 21 adults and children, according to the organization in a news release.

Deputies say the fire was not accidental, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post.

“Accelerants were located inside the apartment unit, and the apartment appeared to be purposefully set on fire,” the post said.

Anyone with information on what happened or surveillance footage of anyone leaving the area at the time of the fire is asked to reach out to the office and ask to speak to a detective, according to the post.

Detectives are investigating the incident.
