A massive annual plant sale in Pierce County is back once again, but things are a little different this year.

The Master Gardener Annual Plant Sale, put on for more than 30 years by the Washington State University Pierce County Extension’s Master Gardener program, has moved locations.

This year, the sale will be held at the Agriplex and Tractor Supply Building at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup, 110 9th Ave. SW.

The sale runs Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Katie Daniels, board member of Master Gardener Foundation of Pierce County, said the move is to accommodate larger crowds since the event has grown more and more popular.

In years past, the sale has been held at the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center. Daniels said hundreds of people line up outside the venue each year to get first dibs.

“We are so excited about this big move to the Fairgrounds,” Daniels said in a news release. “This space is bigger, more accessible, and right off the I-5 Freeway. Plant lovers from across the state will love the wide variety of plants at good prices, talking with the Master Gardeners, and learning something new about sustainable gardening techniques.”

The free event will have thousands of plant types, including native species, vegetables, herbs, trees, shrubs, perennials and over 40 different varieties of tomato, according to Daniels.

The sale will feature other vendors, gardening books and an on-site “Ask a Master Gardener” clinic. A new addition this year is live classes that will be held during the plant sale, including “Reimagining your Lawn” and “Attracting Native Bees to your Garden Oasis.”

Proceeds from the sale go toward a number of projects within the WSU Extension Pierce County Master Gardener Program, like youth outreach programs and gardening clinics.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring a cart, wagon or box to carry their purchases.
