Narrows Bridge joint repaired, all westbound lanes reopen for traffic

Crews finished repairing a broken expansion joint on the Tacoma Narrow Bridge on Friday. All lanes on westbound State Route 16 across the span, as well as the Jackson Avenue ramp, were re-opened, WSDOT shared on X.

The department will need to conduct more repairs in the future, the post said. Expect more lane closures in the upcoming weeks.

The closures began Wednesday when WSDOT crews discovered a damaged joint underneath the right two lanes of westbound traffic.

For the safety of Gig Harbor-bound drivers, crews closed the lanes indefinitely until the bridge was repaired, the agency shared in a press release.

Travel from Tacoma to Gig Harbor was reduced to two lanes, with the HOV lane open for all vehicles while repairs lasted.

The bridge underwent three emergency repairs on westbound SR-16 last year, and it would cost nearly $180 million to address all the needed repairs, The News Tribune previously reported.
