Firefighters rescue injured horse from Pierce County creek

An injured horse stuck in a small creek in Roy was rescued by firefighters Tuesday.

Firefighters from South Pierce Fire & Rescue and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue were in the 2000 block of 336th Street South at 8:41 a.m. for the rescue. The injured horse was stressed and did not have the strength to get out of the creek on its own, SPFR assistant cheif of operations David Chase told The News Tribune.

A harness was tied around the horse and a rope attached. Chase said 10 to 11 firefighters pulled the rope to get the horse up and out of the creek.

A local veterinary clinic provided emergency care to the horse. The Sheriff’s Office’s animal-control team assisted after the rescue was complete, Chase said.

He was unsure how severely injured the horse was but said the animal was cold and weak.

Chase said he did not know how the horse got in the creek. The horse is privately owned, but Chase did not have information on who the owner.

The rescue took about an hour after firefighters got to the scene.
