Parkland road closed after power pole crash
Update: The driver in a crash earlier this morning has died.
Carly Cappetto, spokesperson for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, said the driver was a woman but declined to release her age until her family has been notified.
According to a Facebook post from PCSO, the driver was speeding westbound on 138th Street East. She crossed into the eastbound lanes to pass another driver, then tried to return to the westbound lane but lost control.
“[She] struck a utility pole, and the force of the impact dislodged the engine. The vehicle then rolled and collided with a parked vehicle,” the post said. “The driver was ejected approximately 40 feet from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other occupants or injuries were reported.”
The post said many homes are without power. Elmhurst Elementary School, which is located at 420 133rd St E in Parkland, said in a post on its website that it is operating on a two-hour delay.
“School will begin at 11:35 a.m.,” the district said in its post. “All in-district morning transportation will arrive two hours later than normal.”
In an update at 9:11 a.m., the district said it had received power again.

A street in Parkland has shut down because of a collision.
Jeff Cable, a captain with Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, told The News Tribune the crash happened at 606 138th Street E. He said they believe a driver crashed into an unoccupied car and then into a power pole.
138th Street East has been shut down, Cable said, with the driver possibly being injured.
The transformer and power lines are sparking, Cable said. As of 7:40 a.m., there are no power outages listed for Tacoma Public Utilities or Puget Sound Energy.
Crews are on scene right now, Cable said.
