Wrong-way crash blocks all lanes of southbound I-5 in Tacoma, WSP says

Update: Southbound I-5 near Tacoma reopened to traffic about 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Earlier: A wrong-way crash Sunday morning has blocked all lanes of southbound Interstate 5 near Tacoma, according to the Washington State Patrol and state Department of Transportation.

The crash was reported about 8 a.m. in the area of south 84th Street and Exit 129, according to WSDOT.

Three vehicles were involved in the wreck and serious injuries have been reported, Trooper Kameron Watts said.

Four people – three adults and one juvenile – were injured, Watts reported in an update. Those injuries range from minor to serious, he said.

Watts added on social media that one person has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular assault.

Southbound traffic is being diverted off the freeway at 72nd Street and back on the freeway at state Route 512, Watts said.

There also was a wreck in the northbound lanes of I-5 that is unrelated to the wrong-way crash, he said.
