Tacoma Humane Society’s leader out following dog attack. Nonprofit to seek new CEO

The top leader of the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is no longer with the nonprofit, an agency spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

“The Board of Directors of the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County (Tacoma Humane) has announced the departure of Chief Executive Officer Leslie Dalzell,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The Board sincerely thanks Leslie for her time and contributions to Tacoma Humane.”

Details surrounding Dalzell’s exit weren’t immediately known.

Her departure comes at a time when the local Humane Society is facing backlash after a dog under its care attacked and killed a pet at the Tacoma City Marathon earlier this month.

“During this transition, the Board of Directors will assume leadership responsibilities to ensure continuity of operations and uninterrupted service to the animals and families we serve,” an agency spokesperson said. “Tacoma Humane’s commitment to long-term sustainability, operational excellence, and community-centered services remains unchanged.”

The agency has engaged a consultant, Peregrine Team, to assist in identifying candidates to lead it moving forward.

Dalzell was appointed the Humane Society’s CEO in March 2023 following roughly six months as its interim chief. She previously served as the agency’s chief financial officer after joining the nonprofit in 2018.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
