One could call it an act of blind faith.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man in the Key Peninsula Thursday after he led them on a chase while his truck’s hood blocked his windshield, according to Pierce County Superior Court documents.

The prosecutor’s office charged Jason Higgenbottom with eluding a police vehicle and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He also had an open felony Department of Corrections warrant for escaping community custody, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, a Pierce County deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driving slowly and braking along the 14000 block of Key Peninsula Highway, according to the arrest affidavit.

But instead of pulling to the right, the truck did a sharp left turn and blocked the opposite lane, the affidavit said. The driver, who was later determined to be Higgenbottom, jumped out of the car to attempt to secure its hood, then drove off.

Shortly after he took off, the hood popped up again and blocked the entire windshield. Still, he continued to flee the police on his tail, the affidavit said.

The vehicle eventually hit spikes thrown by Kitsap County deputies. As smoke grew from its tires and engine, the car slowed and deputies were able to disable the vehicle on Bethley Burley Road and Cashmere Road, the affidavit said.

The investigation is still ongoing.
