University of Washington Tacoma’s campus has chosen a development partner for its onsite housing and dining project.
Maslow’s Campus Communities, an Austin, Texas -based real estate developer, was selected through a request for qualifications and proposals process.
The project is the first one to move forward under UWT’s campus master plan.
“With this milestone, the project will advance to the negotiation and design phase of development,” UWT said in a release issued June 4.
The project team includes West Coast-based architectural firm SERA Architects and Pacific Northwest general contractor Walsh Construction Co., according to the release.
The team’s selection is subject to approval by the UW Board of Regents.
“One of the topics I’m often asked about is when the University of Washington Tacoma will have traditional dorms and an on-campus dining hall,” said UW Tacoma Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange in a statement. “Our student housing and dining development project is a big step forward for our campus, and we are excited to work with Maslow’s Campus Communities to make this a reality for our students and our community.”
Construction is anticipated to start in the fall of 2027 with completion in late 2029, according to campus representatives.
The estimated cost for the project is $115 million, but that is subject to change as design and details evolve, according to Elizabeth Metcalf, director of communications for UWT.
According to the release, “The project will add housing for nearly 500 additional students to live on campus and include UW Tacoma’s first traditional dining hall, offering healthy, flexible meal options and a welcoming space for students to gather and connect.”
The university’s long-term goal is to increase total enrollment to 10,000 students and to expand its physical site in Tacoma. As of last fall, the campus saw more than 5,000 students enrolled.
“Once complete, campus boundaries will extend from South 17th Street to South 21st Street, and from Pacific Avenue to Tacoma Avenue,” the release noted.
