2 teens arrested for climbing to top of Tacoma bridge Saturday night, WSP says

Two male teens, ages 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of criminal trespassing after they climbed to the top of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Saturday night, according to the Washington State Patrol.

About 9:40 p.m., troopers were dispatched to the east tower on the westbound side of state Route 16, which crosses the bridge.

During the arrest, westbound traffic was halted for almost two hours, Trooper Kameron Watts said Sunday.

The two teens also are facing obstruction charges because they allegedly tried to hide from troopers on the bridge, Watts said.

A small state Department of Transportation maintenance elevator was used to bring the two teens back to the road, but it took some time because only so many people can ride in it at one time, Watts said.
