Person killed driving off overpass in Tacoma, plummeting to ground below

A fatal crash Monday morning left a hole in the barrier of the Portland Avenue overpass near Cleveland Way in Tacoma. According to police, a pickup driver went off the bridge and plummeted to the ground, where the vehicle caught fire.

The incident was reported by a passerby at 5:21 a.m. Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Shelbie Boyd said the Fire Department also reported hearing an explosion under the Portland Avenue overpass.

The police did not have any info about the cause of the crash or details about the driver. Boyd said the Fire Department responded and put out the vehicle fire. The driver was found dead inside.

Photos shared by the Fire Department appeared to show debris near train tracks under the overpass, south of Cleveland Way.

Boyd said the roadway was shut down during the response to the incident. The roadway was reopened shortly before 8 a.m.
