16-year-old boy killed after vehicle veers off of embankment near Gig Harbor
A 16-year-old boy was killed Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. after his vehicle veered off the embankment in the 5600 block of 98th Avenue Northwest, according to Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carly Cappetto.
Cappetto wrote in a text message Thursday that the boy “was on his way home and did not make the corner while traveling at a high rate” of speed. He did not survive his injuries, she wrote.
The site of the crash is near Kopachuck Middle School.
The News Tribune reached out to the Peninsula School District to ask for more information. A spokesperson shared a message that Gig Harbor High School Principal Bob Marshall sent to GHHS staff, students and families Thursday morning.
“This morning, we shared the tragic news with our staff and students that a former Gig Harbor High School student passed away in a single car accident last night,” Marshall wrote. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the student’s family, friends, and teachers.
“To support our school community, PSD has provided extra counselors and administrative staff. They are available on campus today for any students or staff members who need to talk through their questions, concerns, or emotions surrounding this event.”
Peninsula School District Chief of Schools Michael Farmer told The News Tribune that the student had withdrawn from GHHS and was not currently enrolled at the school.
In his message, Marshall also shared a resource for families with tips for talking with children after traumatic events.
“If you have any concerns about how your child, a fellow staff member, or a peer is reacting to this loss, please reach out to my office, our counselors, or a teacher for support,” he wrote.
“Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. If we receive any information from the student’s family, we will share it with you. Please keep the family in your thoughts.”
