Graham-area school bus crash closes SR 161, one in critical condition

Update 6:07 p.m.: There were 35 students on the bus during the crash, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue posted on X.

The Washington State Patrol will lead the collision investigation.

Update 5:18 p.m.: One juvenile was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Watts shared on X.

This stretch of SR 161 will be “closed to traffic for a while,” Watts said. Cars caught in the backup are being rerouted.

Update 5:09 p.m.: One person was pronounced dead at the scene, Watts shared on X. There are still no reports of any injuries on the school bus.

Update 5:00 p.m.: The bus is an Eatonville School District vehicle, Watts told The News Tribune. The school and ages of the passengers are unknown at this time.

Original post: A pick-up truck and school bus collided on State Route 161 near Graham Thursday afternoon, State Trooper Kameron Watts told The News Tribune.

Authorities were dispatched at 4:25 p.m. to the intersection of SR 161 and Eustis Hunt Road for a school-bus and vehicle crash.

The driver of the pick-up truck is in critical condition, Watts shared on X. None of the children on the school bus reported injuries so far, he said.

Both sides of SR 161 are blocked just north of the crash site as authorities clear the scene. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and expect delays.
