Man hospitalized after homemade fireworks explosion in Lakewood

A man has been hospitalized in Lakewood after an attempt to make homemade fireworks ended in an explosion.

According to a news release from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 in the 6100 block of Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest.

“The 47-year-old male suspect had been making explosives and explosive devices when one of his explosive compounds detonated,” the release said.

The man received serious injuries, the release said, while a detached shed on the property “sustained structural damage.”

“Explosive materials were found throughout the debris,” the release said. “... Once [PCSO] confirmed the scene was safe, the Lakewood Police Department took custody of the scene and the investigation.”
