Two dead after high-speed crash in Pierce County

Two people are dead after a crash in Spanaway.

According to a Facebook post from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, the crash happened in the 400 block of Military Road East at about 8:30 p.m. on June 19.

The driver, a 48-year-old man, was driving at high speed and tried to avoid colliding with a man mowing his front lawn, the post said. He tried to correct himself and left the roadway and hit a tree.

The impact caused the car to split in half, the post said.

The driver died at the scene along with a 37-year-old woman in the back passenger seat, the post said. A 53-year-old woman in the front passenger seat was transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.

“There were numerous empty alcohol containers in the wreckage,” the post said. “It is believed alcohol was a factor in this collision.”

The News Tribune has reached out to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office for more information on the front passenger’s status.
